THE SIBENIK CATHEDRAL
The cathedral of St. Jacob in Sibenik is a basilica with three apses and a dome. Construction of the cathedral began in the Venetian gothic style, but was finished in the style of Tuscan renaissance. Construction lasted almost 15 decades through the 15th and 16th centuries. St. DONATUS' CHURCH
The monumental building in the pre Romanesque style that Bishop Donatus had built in the 9th century, and which has borne his name since the 15th century on. For its construction many roman buildings pieces were used, and this is why there are roman temple pillars and capitols in the foundations. The church has long since not been used for religious purposes. It has excellent acoustic characteristics and has therefore been used for musical performances of the famous International Festival of Medieval Renaissance Music, "The Musical Evenings in St. Donatus" for more than thirty years.
St. STOSIJA'S CHURCH
Received its contemporary form in the high Romanesque style period during the 12th and 13th centuries and is the largest cathedral in Dalmatia.
St. NICOLAUS CHURCH
Is located on a hill-earthen grave in the field for crowning Prahulje near Nin and represents the most romantic monument of the history of Nin. "According to the people tradition seven kings were crowned in Nin and on the occasion of crowning the crowned ruler would arrive riding with the suite to the church of St. Nicolaus where he introduced himself to the people and made a sign with a sword to the four sides of the world.
CHURCH St. CROSS- the Smallest Cathedral in the World
Among the most important preserved monuments of the oldcroatian church architecture, of an unique architectural style the church St. Cross from the 9th century ,called «the smallest cathedral in the world». It is put into the representative monuments of the earlymiddleages architecture because of its original form.
BISHOP GRGUR FROM NIN AND GLAGOLISTA
One of the most significant bishops from Nin (60 bishophs are known) is certainly bishop Grgur from Nin, the chancellor f the Croatian Court.In the 10th century he was the main fighter for oldslavic language and the peoples' alphabet and for using of glagolitsa in liturgy. In 925 the Croatian ruler Tomislav proclaimed himself a king with recognition of Pope. Bishop Grgur from Nin had at that time the leading church position in the Croatian state. The bronze sculpture of bishop Grgur awaits you proudly in the center of the old city of Nin «making» your wishes true if you touch his tomb.
SEA ORGANS
A moder icon of the city and lately the most popular tourist attraction are the famous Sea organs. Constructed after the idea of Nikola Bašić, they are located on the Zadar waterfront, near the new cruiser port. This unique instrument can be recognized as 230 feet of steps decending to the sea. The steps hide within 35 tubes of different legth, making a total of 7 accords of 5 notes. The movement of the waves runs air through these tubes, creating a natural simphony. Be sure not to miss the Zadar sunset accompanied by the cocert of the sea.
